Choosing Wedding Cakes to Wow Your Guests

Tuesday, September 27th, 2011

When it comes to planning weddings, one of the fun parts is choosing wedding cakes, after all it’s a great opportunity to sample slice after slice of delicious cake before reaching a decision on who you are going to trust to bake it for you. Before you get carried away with the tasting, however, take some time to imagine what you would like the wedding cake of your dreams to actually look like.

Traditionally wedding cakes were iced in white and set up in a series of tiers, but nowadays there are lots of different ways of displaying your cake. In general your cake should match the feel of the day. If your wedding is to be a formal affair, with a long white dress and top hat and tails, then the occasion calls for a formal style of wedding cake. It can be very elaborate or stunningly simple, as long as it conveys a formal air about it. It doesn’t have to be round; square or hexagonal shapes work equally as well, and it could be stacked for a more modern look or set on pillars for an airy grace. For a less formal wedding, you can really break away from tradition and embrace the unconventional. Your cake could be iced with meringue and scattered with flower petals, you could have just one large cake if the wedding is small, or you could choose cupcakes or even pastries to be displayed on pretty cake stands.

Quite often the venue itself may lend itself to some design ideas. If you’re getting married on the beach, your cake could incorporate some seashells as decoration, or if your reception is to be held in a large garden, then introduce some elements from the garden such as sugar paste flowers. You can also take your ideas from the wedding outfits by picking out one or two colours from the bride’s bouquet or the bridesmaids’ frocks. Fresh flowers to my mind always look lovely on top of wedding cakes, and if they give off a delicate perfume, so much the better.

As to the flavour of the cake, traditionally it is fruit or yellow or chocolate sponge. But it needn’t be the case. Why not have lemon, carrot or hazelnut, for example. The cake could also be matched to the type of meal that is being served. If you’re having a Moroccan feast then why not have an orange flavoured cake or a ginger cake with an Asian buffet. You could also introduce different flavours by means of the filling. Besides the conventional butter cream or frosted filling, you could opt for fruit purees, whipped cream, lemon curd or chocolate or fudge fillings. The only limit is your imagination.

Finding The Perfect Wedding Destination

Monday, November 16th, 2009

Destination weddings are held on the beach or in some other exotic location and are generally casual and fun. They combine the ceremony, reception, and honeymoon into a memorable vacation for the couple and their guests. The hardest part is often finding a location that suits the couple and the guests they wish to have in attendance.

Due to the travel involved, it is best to keep the guest list for your destination wedding short and sweet. Limiting it to immediate family and a few close friends is wise. Small groups can often benefit from travel and accommodation discounts, so these expenses might be surprisingly low if you get a package deal.

Keeping the guest list small also makes it easier to ensure that everyone you invite will be there. Guests will need to arrange for childcare, time off from work, and house sitting. Notify your guests of the date as soon as you set it, even if you haven’t yet chosen a destination. This will give them plenty of time to make arrangements.

Making a list of your priorities can help you choose the best destination for your wedding. If you want to get married on the beach but aren’t particularly choosy about which beach it is, it makes sense to choose one that is close by rather than one in a foreign country. Doing so will be less expensive if money is a primary concern. On the other hand, if you have a particular location in mind that has sentimental value, planning well in advance will help make it a reality.

If you have several destinations in mind but are having a hard time deciding on one, making a list of each destination’s pros and cons can be helpful. Take into consideration cost, travel distance, and special requirements such as passports. Research each location thoroughly online if you’ve never been there yourself, or ask for advice from friends who have traveled.

If you have ever dreamed of a place which feels like a fairytale, yet is modern and bustling metropolis, Prague is the right spot. What could be more romantic than having your wedding ceremony in the middle of the oldest bohemian settlement, with splendid Prague castle behind your back and ancient gargoyles blessing your step into matrimony? Prague is ultimately the most beautiful place where you can profess your love for one another.
